Kim Gullion Stewart

Artist member since 2022
Pro
Spruce Grove, Alberta

Kim Gullion Stewart has been a visual artist for more than 30 years. She’s a member of the Métis Nation with her Father’s heritage connecting her to Red River and her mother’s reaching back to the Ukraine. Kim looks for metaphorical meaning, connecting Métis art forms to historical photos, vintage maps and other pop culture items, to search the depths of her indigenous identity for knowledge systems that may be hidden, lost, or adapted as a survival mechanism.

Kim’s work was recently featured on a Canadian postage stamp recognizing the difficult path that indigenous people in Canada have to walk and in 2020, Kim was a chosen finalist in 2021 for the notable Canadian art award, the Salt Spring National Art Prize.

Kim has diplomas in Fine Art, Graphic Design and Illustration and holds a Master’s Degree in Art Education. She has mentored in traditional art forms with Elders and peers - Jean Walker (Métis), Alberta TwentyStands (Cheyenne), Lynette LaFontaine (Métis), Lucy and Shirley Bock (Carrier), Mary Ghostkeeper (Métis), Gertie Regan (Métis), and Brenda Crabtree (Nlaka'pamux / Sto:lo)

Kim currently works and teaches from her home studio in Pinantan Lake, BC, Canada in the unceeded traditional territory of the Secwe̓pemc people. Her art can be found in collections across Canada and internationally in the US, Japan, and Great Britain.

Q+A

What kind of artwork do you have in your home?

I have a variety of art in my home, a signed print by Carl Beam, a beautiful Rocky Mountainscape by Trevor Lloyd Jones, paintings by Annerose Georgeson, a collection of embroidered tufted and beaded gloves and moccasins, and finally vintage lace!

Beverage of choice

My daughter who spent time as a coffee barista and taught me how to make the most delicious Matcha Lattes!

When did you start making art, and why?

I actually remember as a little girl drawing detailed pictures of birthday parties, family time, and playing with my friends to remember how good it feels to be with people who care about you. From there, it never stopped. As a teen I fell in love with drawing horses for a bit, then a high school art teacher encouraged me to go to art school. My motivation for making art was always to capture a feeling and hold it in a space where I can revisit it when I want to.

Favourite medium

Right now I am in love with pairing vintage imagery, like maps, photos, old novel covers with my embroidered floral beadwork patterns
